“The model is corrugated board and glue, the ‘bookblock’ sandwiched to make the thickness and the folded ‘case’ slightly larger to overlap; the hinge or ‘groove’ made by running a bone folder along the flute next to the spine. Of course when the real thing is sent out it will be packed in this same stuff, so there’s an inversion of material; and outside of this model, at the moment, is just the idea.”

Compiled from a review of forty years of artworks and working files, Manifold examines the various publications and associated works in sequential order. It details and illustrates the ideas and methods that contributed to over one hundred and fifty individual projects, with page plans, annotations, quotations and explanatory texts.

Book

Manifold is a printed document that is both extensive and large in format, in contrast to the generally modest and plain nature of most of the single publications which form its content. Reproduction is in colour throughout, edited and assembled from scans, photographs and texts, as well as the integration of scaled pdfs in the layouts of the later period. Although newly-written notes and commentaries are included as background to many of the projects, the result is not intendedly critical or academic, but more likened to a technical or specialist resource.

“…not just concerned with how reading books is like other things, but also with how other things are like reading books.”

First edition of 100 signed and numbered copies, 2025.

192pp, 210 x 305mm, high-quality colour digital on uncoated cartridge, perfect bound in board covers with corrugated sleeve.

Online

As well as the physical publication, Manifold is openly available via the succession of thumbnail pages below which can be clicked to open a pdf in a new tab, so the complete book can be read page by page, and the files downloaded freely. The implication is that you might read one page at a time, a screenful as it were, and proceed sequentially or in a more scattershot way—the ‘depth’ of thumbnails contrasting with the lateral extent of bound pages.*

Since beginning this website in 2007, its means of construction hasn’t changed, with plain templates and basic html coding applied to all the original works and documentation of both my own publishing and that of Uniformbooks. It is an example of what J. R. Carpenter has characterised as a handmade web** one particular aspect of which is a lack of compatibility with more recent devices such as tablets and phones—its principle form is the desktop monitor or laptop.

“Common to current practice of research, of writing and composition, and publishing, are the framed workings—browser, word processor, formatter. The process of construction is made within the illuminated bounds of the device itself, and the reader in a document viewer or browser reads likewise.” (‘Boundary’, 2009; Manifold, p.168)

* Several parts are planned to be viewed as double-page spreads and are ideally viewed as two-pages in a pdf reader: [A–Z], Stop book, sidesaddle, kswhatab etc., Sections, locomotor, rota, abrv, way, lightbox/keyboard, Spate. The arrows return to the top.
